What follows is the latest installment in our series on the inaugural women’s Ashes tour of 1934/35. The previous installment is here.
Western Australia Women v England Women
Day Two
Monday 26th November 1934
England 3-201 dec drew with Western Australia 82 (Capes 29, Monaghan 11, Maclagan 5-16, Turner 2-15) and 3-59 (L Edwards 20*, Capes 15, I Edwards 11, Hide 2-4)
The game resumed today under overcast skies. Despite a determined effort, Western Australia could not avoid the follow-on, Maclagan’s off-spin claiming five wickets. While the crowd may have enjoyed seeing England bat again, Archdale was focused on securing victory.
The Edwards sisters opened the batting with greater confidence. Their rate of scoring improved until Irene Edwards was dismissed, having made 21 runs in nineteen minutes. Steady batting followed, with only three more wickets falling by the time stumps were drawn at 14:45. England proved to be the superior team, but Western Australia gained valuable experience and performed admirably.
The England team was driven to Fremantle and given a resounding send-off at the quay. Shortly after 17:00, the steamer departed Fremantle, taking them to the eastern states.
