Day 3
Hastings (R.A.F. Club Week): Lord Cowdray’s XI v The Rest
Gilligan Bowls Rest to Victory
LORD COWDRAY’S XI 314/8 dec and 159 (H T W Hardinge 32, F S G Calthorpe 21, H M Morris 25, G Geary 26*; A E R Gilligan 7/90, M W Tate 3/37). THE REST 367 and 107/6 (E H Bowley 26*, H A Peach 21, D J Knight 20, M W Tate 22; A Waddington 3/34). The Rest won by four wickets. Overnight score was: Lord Cowdray’s XI (2) 54/4 (Hardinge 14*, Calthorpe 21*).
More night rain delayed the start due to the wet outfield and the bowlers found it difficult to get a foothold when play began. In spite of this Arthur Gilligan and Maurice Tate bowled superbly, with Gilligan getting the better luck, although Tate did take the wicket of the adhesive Wally Hardinge to complete 200 for the season, to add to his 1000 runs. Overall Gilligan bowled for almost the entire innings, including yesterday evening, and was deadly and accurate, taking seven wickets, four of them bowled out, and completing 100 wickets this season. None of the batsmen played the major innings that was needed, and Cowdray’s eleven could set The Rest only 107 to win.
The Rest also struggled against the pace bowling of Abe Waddington and George Geary, though, with Andy Sandham (2) and Robert Relf (4) both out cheaply to Waddington. Donald Knight was the best of the batsmen, Ted Bowley played steadily, Tate made some aggressive shots just at the right time, and despite a rain interruption they just managed to complete victory with five minutes to spare.
Scarborough: Gentlemen v Players
No Play — Rain, Match Drawn
PLAYERS 144 and 39/1. GENTLEMEN 198. Match drawn.
Rain began to fall half an hour before the scheduled start of play, and continued so long that by the time it stopped after lunch the outfield was so sodden that it was clear that no play could be possible today.
