Day 2
Perth: Western Australia v M.C.C.
Freeman Entwines Western Australia
M.C.C. 397. WESTERN AUSTRALIA 138 (M W Loton 38, A D Drew 18, R M Evans 21; A E R Gilligan 3/20, A P Freeman 6/47) and (following on) 34/3 (G R Blundell 14*, R M Evans 2*; M W Tate 2 wkts). Overnight score was: M.C.C. (1) 397 all out.
It was not an exciting day’s cricket, with only 172 runs being scored in the full day, but the Western Australia players were out of their class and some of them put up a good fight. Two teenagers showed solid defence and good composure for quite a while, the opening batsman Morris Loton batting for 1¾ hours for his 38 and Bert Drew almost the same time for 18. The only batsman to try to dominate the bowling was the captain, Royston Evans, who hit a fluent 21. The other batsmen were quite bamboozled by the spin of Tich Freeman and could not read his googly, giving him a good haul of six wickets. Arthur Gilligan enforced the follow-on, and Maurice Tate bowled out the openers for only 10 runs on the board. The M.C.C. ground fielding was very good, but they did miss some chances in the field. They will no doubt be hoping to wrap up the match by lunchtime tomorrow.
