Day 2
Pietermaritzburg: Natal v S B Joel’s XI
Rain Ensures Draw
S B JOEL’S XI 179 and 108/5 (E H Bowley 24, G E Tyldesley 40*, L H Tennyson 18; A F Borland 2/46, A W Nourse 2/21). NATAL 202 (H W Taylor 58, D F Conyngham 24*, A F Borland 34; A S Kennedy 5/67, C S Marriott 4/58). Match drawn. Overnight score was: Natal (1) 122/6 (Taylor 58*, Billing 0*).
The Englishmen appeared to have gained an advantage when Father Marriott trapped Herby Taylor lbw with the second ball of the day, but Dalton Conyngham and Albert Borland staged a lower-order rally to take the Natal total to over 200 and a first-innings lead. Solly Joel’s team again made an uncertain start to their second innings, and Ernest Tyldesley dug in. The batting was slow until Lionel Tennyson decided to stir things up by scoring 18, with four fours, in 11 minutes before he was brilliantly caught by Eric Dalton off the bowling of Dave Nourse. Five wickets were still down for 97 in midafternoon, but then the dull sky that had dominated the match developed into a heavy thunderstorm and the match had to be abandoned.
