Day 3
The Oval: The Rest v Champion County (Yorkshire)
Rhodes Holds Firm but Yorkshire Collapse
YORKSHIRE 166 and 234 (Oldroyd 43, R Kilner 20, W Rhodes 42*, G G Macaulay 25; J W H T Douglas 4/31, J W Hearne 2/30). THE REST 524/8 dec. The Rest won by an innings and 124 runs. Overnight score was: Yorkshire (2) 103/2 (Oldroyd 27*, Kilner 14*).
Yorkshire again failed to live up to their standards of 1923 as they went down to the admittedly very powerful Rest of England team by an innings today. Overnight rain had made the pitch more difficult for batting. Roy Kilner was soon caught in the slips off a slash at a ball from Gilligan, bowling from the Vauxhall end with the wind behind him. Oldroyd put up a good fight for a while, and so did Rhodes. Rhodes shared partnerships of 49 with Emmott Robinson, who was remarkably caught by Jack Hearne in the gully off a fierce hit to a rare long hop from Maurice Tate, and then with George Macaulay, who hit defiantly.
The last six wickets put on 103 altogether, which meant that the other four partnerships made only 5 runs among them. Johnny Douglas took the last three wickets quickly, leaving Rhodes unbeaten with a fine 42 of excellent judgment in 2½ hours, and the match and the sodden 1924 season were over.
Reviews of the season will follow in future days.
