Cape Town: Western Province Schools and Colleges XV v S B Joel’s XI (one-day match, not first-class).
S B JOEL’S XI 133 (J C W MacBryan 30, P Holmes 21, T O Jameson 24*; A J Bell 6/35). WESTERN PROVINCE SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES 34 (C W L Parker 6/1, E H Bowley 3/18) and 46/11 (C W L Parker 4/13, E H Bowley 4/11).
Solly Joel’s team began their tour of South Africa with a one-day match against this young Western Province side. No report has been received on the state of the pitch, but the young pace bowler Sandy Bell troubled the English batsmen and took six wickets. This was mild, though, compared to the effect of Charlie Parker’s bowling, as he took six wickets for only one run in the local side’s first innings. The tourists were poised for an innings victory, but time ran out. They go immediately into their next fixture tomorrow, a two-day match given first-class status against Western Province on this same Newlands ground.
